I hope that each of my students had a wonderful Easter break! Mine was restful, and I enjoyed the time with my family. We have no more scheduled days off from school, until summer break. It seems strange to be writing about Summer break on the class blog already. This year is flying by, but is definitely not over. This week the students will continue to review for the Unit 7 Summative Math test. This morning we reviewed the Post test, and highlighted the correct answers, so that students can take it home and use it as a second study guide. (The first study guide was sent home previously.) In writing/reading we continue to explore personal narratives, fairy tales & to prepare for the MAP test.

It's hard to believe that we are already halfway through January! The class has continued to work hard on our current geometry math unit. If you would like to use a fun geometry review at home with your child, check out our third grade geometry resources page. This page is full of fun games your child can play at home to help solidify his/her grasp of area and shape recognition.
We continue to work on our persuasive speech writing unit. The kids are coming up with some really sweet persuasive speeches focusing on remembering to thank those who serve our country in our armed forces, police force and fire department. I've seen some rough drafts of very thoughtful speeches this week.
The class is loving our new reading unit and the associated read-aloud. The unit focuses on reading strategies and vocabulary associated with mystery texts. Our current read aloud is:The Falcon's Feathers, by Ron Roy. It is a book from the A-Z Mystery series, and the students love sharing thinking with a classmate about suspects, clues and evidence.

I am so proud of the class! They came back from their Christmas Break ready to learn. The last two days of school have been wonderful, with all students "staying on green," and several moving up a level in their multiplication fast facts. We have also begun to prepare for the new online MAP test that students will be taking later this year. If you would like to see what the test will be like, click Smarter Balance Practice link above, click sign in (don't worry about entering any info), select grade 3 in the drop down menu, click yes, then click on the box that says "Start G3 practice test." This will load the online practice test we are using in class. As of today, we have gone through questions 1-6 together.
In writing we just launched a unit on persuasive/opinion writing. Students are brainstorming lists of things that they believe need to change at home, in our school, and in our world. They have used these lists to select two possible topics for their upcoming writing, and I can't wait to read what they create!
Our reading unit that the students dubbed "the Patricia Polacco unit," has come to a close. Students are now looking for her books in the school and classroom library. They are going to thoroughly enjoy our upcoming unit that will focus on Mystery books, and reading strategies to help deepen their comprehension in the genre.
I know that many parents have questions regarding report cards, upcoming school events, and days that school will not be in session. We have just launched a new unit in math, that focuses on determining the area of a plane figure. Please continue to work on multiplication fact mastery with your child at home, as the work in this unit is much easier for students who have a thorough knowledge of their multiplication facts. In writing students are continuing to add to their non-fiction animal presentations, and we look forward to reading over our final published pieces with our kindergarten reading buddies later this month. In science we have been discussing the scientific method, and will soon be working on a mini-unit that focuses on the moon/solar system.

It's hard to believe that we only have 14 school days until Christmas Break. This month will be full of great learning opportunities and some fun holiday activities. Students received a new classroom calendar today. Please look over your students calendar every night and initial it.
I know that I posted a blog update just a few days ago, but I wanted to once again remind students of two wonderful resources that they can access on their home computers or tablets. The first is RAZ kids. Many of the students are familiar with RAZ kids , due to using it in second grade. It is a online reading resource, that allows children to access hundreds of eBooks, and even record themselves reading the book. Another great resource is IXL. IXL is an online math resource that that allows your student to review and learn math skills in an engaging way. I have included links to both sites below. Your student will be given a password reminder note to bring home today.

I can't believe that Winter weather is on its' way already! Snow flurries are on the forecast for the upcoming weekend. Please make sure your student brings a coat to school for recess.
The students have been hard at work on their non-fiction research pieces. Many students have nearly completed their research on their animal and are ready to create a Google presentation about it. In math, we have begun working on input/output boxes and continue to work on multi-step word problems. Please continue to encourage your student to study his/her multiplication facts, as multiplication fact mastery makes it much easier for students to solve the multi-step problems.
Below are a few important upcoming dates.
Wednesday, November 12: Picture Retake Day
Thursday, November 13: Second Grade Musical
Friday, November 14: Tiger Token Pajama Day
Tuesday, November 25: Tiger Pride Assembly (2:30, lunchroom)
November 26-28: Thanksgiving Break/No School

An amazing online math resource for students!
I recently learnd about a wonderful math resource that students can utilize both at school and at home. It is called Front Row. This site administers a "baseline" test to each student, and then assigns various activities for the student to complete through the site. To log in students will need to type in their proper names with no punctuation or abbreviations, and the class code. The class code is listed below along with the link.

I am so proud of the class today! They worked very hard on their Unit 1 Summative Math Test, and I saw a lot of improvement. Please check the email address you gave the school for a Mastery Connect email from me. The email will allow you to view your student's online grade tracker. If you did not receive an email from me, please check your spam folder. I have heard that many parents have had the email go straight to their spam folder. If you do not have an email link from me, please send in a note with your student, or email me you current email address, and I will get it entered into the system.

Students have been working hard to solve addition and subtraction problems that require regrouping. This weekend's homework is a worksheet with 12 subtraction problems. Please look over your student's work, and make sure he/she is "show their work." Students who correctly complete the worksheet, with all work shown, will receive a treat on Monday.
We are still working on personal narratives. The students are enjoying typing their pieces on their classroom Chromebooks. I'm looking forward to using the Chromebooks to encourage the kids to better revise and edit their work.
In Social Studies, we are learning about the 3 types of communities: rural, urban, & suburban. We will be celebrating our learning next week, by having a Rural communities themed dress up day on Wednesday, September 10, 2014. Students can come to school in their overalls, cowboy boots and cowboy hats.

Our class has been working hard this week. Students have learned to use a strong lead to capture their reader's attention as they craft personal narratives, solve for an unknown number using fact families, and how to check for understanding as they read. Please continue to work with your student on place value. Today he/she will be bringing home place value (review) homework. The questions all have the same format, and we have done worksheets just like it in class. Students have to look at the digit chosen, and state its' value within the number (ex: What is the value of the 3 in 5,325... The value of the 3 is 300, because the 3 is in the hundred's place.)

We have just completed our first, full week of third grade, and the students are working hard! We have established classroom routines, and expectations, worked on getting to know each other and taken our first math test. Our first math test is known as a formative test, and is by no means a final score. It is given to the students at a unit's beginning and allows teachers to know what knowledge a student already has in relation to particular math concept.
In our math lessons, we are currently building on the place value knowledge students have from second grade, in order to round numbers to the nearest 10's and 100's. We will soon be combining rounding and estimation in our lessons. Please continue to look over the math papers that come home with your student and remind him/her of our "rounding rhymes"
- 5 or more, up the score, 4 or less down is best! or
- Mark your spot, look to the right, 4 or less is out of sight. 5 or more add one more!
In writing, we are focusing on crafting quality, personal narratives. We have talked about choosing a strong memory to write about, describing important details well and using transition words to guide our readers through the piece. Students completed their first writing prompt, yesterday.
We just began reading a new book as part of our reading unit (Stone Fox by John Reynolds Gardiner.) As we read, we are pausing to discuss many reading strategies that foster deeper comprehension and reading fluency. Today's lesson in particular focused on reading stronger. We talked about following text with our eyes, not our finger, reading with feeling, and varying our reading rate based on how well we understand what's happening in the book.
